This Is All a Test
Your struggle isn’t a detour from your destiny — it may be the road to it

It’s tempting to see an addictive struggle as a purely negative interruption to an otherwise good life — something to eliminate so real life can finally begin. Scripture suggests a different, more hopeful framing: the struggle itself may be part of a much bigger process God is using to prepare you for what’s ahead.
God Tests His People — This Isn’t New
Testing shows up from nearly the first pages of Scripture to the last. In Genesis, God allows a test that carries enormous consequences. In Revelation, testing is still very much part of the picture. In between, Deuteronomy describes Israel’s forty years in the wilderness explicitly as a test — “to humble you and to test you in order to know what was in your heart” (8:2). From beginning to end, testing is a consistent thread in how God works with His people.
What Testing Actually Reveals
Tests aren’t primarily about tripping people up. They reveal what’s actually inside — truths about our hearts that often stay hidden even from ourselves until real pressure brings them to the surface. Scripture even commands believers to “examine yourselves” and “test yourselves” (2 Corinthians 13:5) — testing isn’t only something that happens to us; it’s something we’re called to actively engage in.
Your Cycle May Be Your Wilderness
Here’s the reframe worth sitting with: your particular struggle — whatever form it takes — may be functioning as your own wilderness experience, the specific proving ground where character gets built before a calling gets fulfilled. This doesn’t make the struggle less serious. It means the struggle isn’t outside of God’s story for your life; it may be very much inside it.
Consider Esau, trading his inheritance for a single meal because he couldn’t see past an immediate craving to the larger destiny at stake (Genesis 25). Consider Israel, given the clearest possible display of God’s power and provision, still repeatedly failing basic tests of trust and patience in the wilderness. These aren’t just ancient cautionary tales — they’re a mirror for how easy it is to trade a real future for a momentary relief.
The Invitation
Every meaningful testimony requires a test that came before it — there’s no story of victory without a real battle first. If you’re in the middle of a genuine struggle right now, that doesn’t disqualify you from the story God is writing. It may be exactly the chapter that makes the rest of the story possible.
