The Great Persecution and The Great Perversion: Two Faces of the Same War
Why the battle for purity is bigger than your own personal struggle

Scripture doesn’t describe the church’s final chapter as a quiet fade-out. It describes it as a war — one the enemy fights differently depending on where you live.
Two Strategies, One Enemy
In parts of the world where the church faces open hostility, the attack is direct: persecution, violence, martyrdom. Historians estimate that more Christians were martyred in the twentieth century alone than in all previous centuries of church history combined — a sobering marker of just how intense this era has become.
In the West, the attack looks completely different, but Scripture suggests it comes from the same source. Instead of physical persecution, it’s spiritual and mental — and its primary target has been sexual purity. Where the enemy can’t kill the church outright, Scripture indicates he works instead to hollow it out from within: isolating believers, burying them in shame, and keeping them too compromised and too silent to be effective.
Jesus Predicted Exactly This Pattern
Matthew 24:10-14 describes a season marked by believers “falling away,” betraying one another, and growing cold in love — alongside “increased wickedness.” Whatever else this passage means, it points to a real, deliberate spiritual strategy: not just chaos, but a targeted effort to compromise believers from the inside.
Why This Matters For Your Own Struggle
If you’re fighting sexual sin privately, it can feel like a small, personal failure — something between you and God, maybe you and your spouse, and no one else. Scripture suggests something bigger is actually happening. Your struggle isn’t just your struggle. It’s one front in a much larger spiritual conflict that the church, corporately, is being tested by right now.
That doesn’t make your sin less serious. It makes your victory more significant. Every believer who breaks free from this specific bondage isn’t just healing their own life — they’re pushing back against a strategy aimed at the whole church.
This Isn’t A Reason For Despair - It’s A Reason To Fight
Understanding the scale of what you’re up against can feel heavy. But Scripture never presents this war as one where the outcome is in doubt. 1 John 3:8 tells us Jesus came specifically “to destroy the devil’s work.” You’re not fighting to determine whether good wins. You’re fighting to take back ground that’s already been won at the cross.
