The second test — and the one most people skip
This post is part of our
Basic Training! Stage 1 series.
“Welcome to Stage 1: Operation Purity”
There’s a version of Christian maturity that looks like keeping your life together on the outside. That’s not what Scripture means by the word. Real maturity, according to Jesus’s own example, is something much narrower and much harder: doing only what God actually asks, even when doing more — or doing it your own way — would look just as good.
The Second Wilderness Test
After the hunger test, Jesus faced a second temptation: the devil dared Him to throw Himself from the temple, daring God to intervene (Matthew 4:5-7). It was an impulsive, dramatic gesture dressed up as faith. Jesus refused — not because the stunt wouldn’t have “worked,” but because impulsive decisions made apart from the leading of the Spirit are still disobedience, no matter how spiritual they look on the surface.
This is the heart of Christian maturity: you don’t do something just because you can, or even because it’s technically good. You do only what the Spirit is actually leading you to do. Jesus was explicit about this pattern in His own life — He did only what the Father commanded, nothing more and nothing less, all the way to the end.
The Real High Point of Jesus’s Life
Most of us think of the Cross as the defining moment of Jesus’s mission. Consider instead the Garden of Gethsemane. That’s where the truly decisive choice happened — the moment Jesus submitted His will to the Father’s, knowing exactly what it would cost Him. Everything that followed — the arrest, the trial, the Cross itself — flowed out of that one act of surrender in the Garden. It was there, not on the Cross, that Jesus’s obedience directly answered Adam’s disobedience in another garden long before. There is no greater love than laying down your life for others — and Gethsemane is where that laying-down truly began.
Why Maturity Comes After Purity
Here’s the order Scripture lays out, and it matters: you don’t reach the maturity test without first passing the purity test. It’s nearly impossible to consistently choose the best option when you’re still repeatedly choosing the worst one. Purity clears the ground maturity needs to grow in.
If your life still feels stuck in impulsive decisions — the same old patterns, the same cycles of good intentions and quick relapse — that’s not a life sentence. It’s simply where growth needs to begin.
What Maturity Could Look Like In Your Actual Life
Imagine consistency you don’t currently have: in your devotional life, your finances, your career decisions, your integrity, your honesty — not through white-knuckled effort, but because righteous choices have become as instinctive as sinful ones once were. That’s not a fantasy. It’s the ordinary fruit of maturity, and it’s available to you the same way it became available to everyone who’s walked this road before you.
