Purity: Why Even Jesus Had to Die to Self

The first test on the road to your Mission Possible

“Welcome to Stage 1: Operation Purity”‍ ‍‍ ‍

If your mission in life hinges on two things — dying to your own flesh, and standing firm against the enemy’s schemes — where do you think the fight usually starts? For most of us, it starts exactly where we’ve struggled the longest: sexual purity.‍ ‍

Jesus didn’t skip this test‍ ‍

Before Jesus began His public ministry, He was led into the wilderness — not by accident, and not as the devil’s idea, but by the Spirit, because His humanity had to be tested first (Matthew 4). Like Israel before Him, Jesus wasn’t ready for His Promised Land until He’d faced the giants standing in front of it. The first giant? Hunger — an ordinary, human, physical need turned into a test of surrender.‍ ‍

The lesson here is bigger than it first appears: purity isn’t only about refusing what’s obviously sinful. It’s about learning to die to self even in normal, healthy desires when they push outside of God’s timing and will. Scripture tells us plainly that Jesus “has been tempted in every way, just as we are — yet He did not sin” (Hebrews 4:15). That includes every category of temptation common to being human, sexual temptation among them. And yet He remained pure — not because temptation skipped Him, but because He understood that satisfying self outside of God’s will always produces bad fruit, no matter how small the compromise looks in the moment.‍ ‍

This applies especially if you’re single, separated, or divorced‍ ‍

If you’re currently without a spouse, this truth is for you directly: reframe abstinence not as deprivation, but as your own wilderness fasting — a test of real spiritual weight, not a waiting room. Wherever you are in life right now — single, separated, married, or divorced — that’s exactly the terrain God intends to use to grow you.‍ ‍

Small deaths, real growth‍ ‍

This is the picture behind the seed that falls to the ground and dies (John 12:24). Every time you say no — to a second look, to something you know you shouldn’t be watching, to any of it — a small piece of the old self dies with that decision. It’s not a quick fix. It’s a slow, sometimes painful process that, over time, produces something new. Like a chrysalis giving way to a butterfly, the transformation is gradual and easy to miss in the moment, but the result is real.‍ ‍

What’s actually at stake‍ ‍

It’s worth pausing to imagine what consistent purity would actually change: a clean conscience. A clearer ability to hear from God. Restored trust with your spouse. A healed marriage. The relationship you want with your children. Real peace instead of low-grade shame running in the background of every day.‍ ‍

If Jesus faced real temptation and still walked in purity, and if the men and women who’ve walked this road with Pureheart before you have made it through — that same road is open to you too.
