Why We Call It "Sexual Heroin"
Understanding why sexual sin is uniquely progressive — and uniquely dangerous

At Pureheart, after decades of counseling men and women through sexual addiction, we’ve started using a phrase that gets people’s attention: sexual heroin. It’s not an exaggeration for shock value. It’s the most accurate description we’ve found for how this particular sin behaves.
Why “Heroin” And Not Just “Addiction”?
Every addiction is powerful. But sexual sin has a few features that make it uniquely difficult to escape:
It’s instantly available. Unlike alcohol or drugs, which require obtaining a substance, sexual temptation is available anytime, anywhere — as close as a phone in your pocket. There’s no dealer to find, no purchase to make, no waiting.
It’s the most hidden of all addictions. Most addictions eventually show visible signs — smell, behavior, physical effects. Sexual sin can be carried in complete secrecy for years, even decades, which only deepens its grip. Shame and secrecy feed each other in a cycle that’s hard to break precisely because no one else knows to help.
It’s progressive. This is the piece most people don’t expect. Nearly every addiction escalates over time — what satisfied you last year rarely satisfies you today. The same is true here, and it’s one of the most important things to understand if you’re going to break free.
The Pattern of Escalation
Addictions of every kind tend to follow the same shape: what starts small stops being enough, and the next step in escalation always seems both like “no big deal” and, later, like a line you never thought you’d cross. This is precisely why sexual sin is so dangerous to underestimate. Nobody starts where they end up. The slide happens one small, seemingly harmless step at a time.
This is exactly why “I can stop whenever I want” and “it’s not that serious” are the two lies that keep people stuck the longest. By the time either statement is tested, the addiction usually has more control than the person realizes.
What Makes This Urgent Right Now
Instant, unrestricted internet access has changed the speed of this progression dramatically. What once might have taken years to escalate can now happen far faster, because every next step is only a click away, with no natural friction to slow it down. This is why we believe this particular struggle deserves urgent, serious attention — not shame, but action.
You Are Not Uniquely Broken
If you recognize this pattern in your own life, here’s what matters most: this isn’t a sign that something is fundamentally wrong with you as a person. It’s a sign that you’re dealing with one of the most powerful, most common struggles facing believers today — and one that responds to the right kind of help.
Naming it honestly is the first step out. Pureheart’s entire counseling and curriculum approach exists because this addiction, as powerful as it is, is not unbreakable.
